Landing Planes At Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport
Today I am sharing four videos high lighting how exciting landing with large aircraft at Kai Tak Airport used to be. In fact pilots had to be specially certified to land at Kai Tak.

Heres what the turn looked like in practice. The landing made for dramatic photo ops. And speaking of 747s this one from Taiwans China Airlines skidded off the Kai Tak runway in November 1993.

So that meant for some crazy skilled pilots. A Boeing 747-409 passenger plane registered B-165 sustained substantial damage in a landing accident at Hong Kong-Kai Tak International Airport HKG Hong Kong. Surrounding the airport were three elements less-than-ideal for aircraft landings.
The compression effect of telephoto lenses made planes appear more sandwiched between buildings than they actually were but still 747 landings were a scary sight. A Cathay Pacific plane passes the checkerboards before landing. A Northwest Airlines 747-200 takes off at Kai Tak.

Typically the plane would enter the final right turn at a height of about 650 feet 200 m and exit it at a height of 140 feet 43 m to line up with the runway. Arriving on runway 13 demanded that aircraft fly until they sighted a checkerboard painted on a hill then pilots took manual control performing a right hand turn at low altitude to reach the runway.

According to Atlas Obscura Kai Tak was built in 1925 on reclaimed land in Kowloon Bay opposite Hong Kong Island. The airport was first used as a flying club and a military airfield but post-WWII it was converted to be a base for national airline. Pilots were aware of the difficulty of the landing and the conditions required to do it successfully.
It remains Hong Kongs International Airport to this day. The challenging approach and land-locked location meant that options for further expansion were limited. In May a plot of land at the former airport site became the citys most valuable when developer Sun Hung Kai Properties paid a record HK2516 billion for it to redevelop into flats.
